Ha ha, I had to work this out the hard way recently when during an intensive rehearsal I lost I don’t know many pencils down behind the fall! A definite Steinway design fault! Eventually the penny dropped and I realised the answer was not to pull the music desk so far forwards – so the pencils I apparently throw around with such abandon end up collecting round the tuning pins instead.
I did find an interesting collection of other rubbish inside the action though, and removing it sorted out a variety of “prepared piano” sounds the instrument had started making..!
